Tetela de Ocampo, the municipality in which Tepetzinla is grown, is an area covered in dense coniferous forest, home to a wide range of wildlife, and with a population that is predominantly indigenous. About 70% of the residents speak Nahuatl and maintain various ancestral customs and traditions. The biggest economic driver in the region is agriculture, with coffee, chili peppers, tomatoes, and beans among the most cultivated crops.
Coffee farmers in this area maintain a strong commitment to environmental protection, and don't use any chemicals to control weeds. Instead, they manage weed growth manually with a machete, a process known as chapeo.
In recent years, Puebla has become the most prominent production region in Mexico, surpassing Oaxaca in productivity. The state is also unique in that it offers agronomic education and resources to local producers, and that impact is seen in the quality of the coffee from these farms.
Tepetzinla offers a warm and rich flavor profile with sweet notes of peanut butter, brown sugar, and spices.
