The San Agustín Loxicha community is nestled in the dense forests of the Sierra Sur region in Oaxaca, lying on the southern Pacific coast of Mexico. Here coffee farms are thoroughly shaded and experience stark rainy and dry seasons on mountainous terrain. Farmers rely on a diverse range of native flora to shade and fertilize coffee trees, among other benefits, including avocado trees, cuajinicuil, and guachepil legume trees.
Producers in this area, unlike most producing communities, typically live 2-3 hours from their farms, traveling by foot or mule. Producing families will often stay in temporary housing on the farm during harvest season to transport the coffee to Loxicha in several trips.
Within Loxicha, indigenous Zapotec languages and traditions remain alive and well. The Pluma variety, a local Typica mutation, has thrived in the region for over 80 years, and many farmers maintain the tradition of planting exclusively this variety.
This coffee offers a more traditional and balanced cup with moderate acidity giving a citrus quality, as well as deeper nuttiness and notes of maple syrup and walnuts. The flavor profile is well showcased as an espresso or french press.
